What French taxi and VTC rules mean for your booking

Taxi, VTC and unlicensed touts: how to tell them apart at the airport, and why the difference matters.
France separates licensed taxis from VTC operators (*voiture de transport avec chauffeur*). Both are legal and regulated; they simply work differently.
Taxis may be hailed or taken from a rank, run on a meter or a fixed airport tariff, and carry a roof light plus a visible licence number.
VTC vehicles must be booked in advance and quote a fixed price at the time of booking. They cannot legally pick up passengers who flag them down in the street. Every VTC operator is registered on the national register and carries a blue VTC disc on the windscreen.
What you should not accept is anyone who approaches you inside the terminal offering a ride. Touting is illegal in French airports, the vehicles are frequently uninsured for passengers, and the price is invariably invented on the spot.
A legitimate driver will know your name, your flight number and your quoted price before you meet.
